Charitable Fund Spotlight: Muslim Social Services

2 minute read

In every community, there are people quietly carrying heavy burdens—newcomers navigating unfamiliar systems, families adjusting to life after displacement, or individuals facing mental health challenges without the means to seek help. Muslim Social Services of Waterloo Region (MSSWR) exists to ensure that no one has to face those struggles alone.

Founded in 2007 by a small group of dedicated volunteers, MSSWR began as a grassroots effort to respond to the growing need for culturally and spiritually sensitive support in the region. Over time, that volunteer initiative grew into a registered charitable organization recognized nationally in 2013. Today, MSSWR continues to serve both Muslim and non-Muslim residents across Waterloo Region, helping build a healthier and more inclusive community where everyone can live with dignity and respect.

At the heart of MSSWR’s work is a commitment to providing services that respect culture, faith, and lived experience. “We don’t turn anyone away,” comments Liz Cooper, Operations Manager at MSSWR. Many newcomers and refugees arrive with complex challenges—trauma, language barriers, financial stress, and isolation. MSSWR responds with programs designed to meet people where they are and support them as they rebuild their lives.

Counselling services are a key part of this support. Through individual, family, and group counselling, the organization offers compassionate mental health care that is both culturally informed and accessible. “Our clients come from diverse backgrounds, so it’s important that they can access counselling services that take their lived experiences into consideration,” adds Liz. Fees are offered on a sliding scale to ensure people can receive help regardless of their financial circumstances.

Beyond counselling, MSSWR provides a wide range of programs that strengthen individuals and families. These include youth mental health programs, women’s leadership initiatives, newcomer supports, and creative programs for children such as healing through art and music. The organization also offers community-building initiatives, from English conversation circles for newcomers to family programming and summer camps. These programs foster connection and belonging.

The impact of this work is significant. MSSWR has served thousands of people through its programs and outreach initiatives, helping individuals overcome isolation, access essential supports, and build new relationships in the community.

MSSWR received a 2026 Kindred Credit Union Charitable Fund grant which will help fund counselling services for individuals who cannot afford them. This will help ensure that more people can access the care they need during difficult times. Together, organizations like MSSWR and community partners are nurturing something powerful: a region where compassion, understanding, and mutual support help everyone thrive.
