Fraud Prevention Month: Tips to Protect Your Accounts

Online security

Your financial accounts are more than just numbers—they’re a big part of your peace of mind. That’s why keeping them secure should always be a priority. With the right tools and a few proactive steps, you can make it much harder for scammers to gain access.

Essential Tools for Account Protection

Security doesn’t have to be complicated. Tools like two-step verification (2SV) where you are required to verify your identity with something you know (like a password) and something you have (like a code texted to your cell phone or an authentication app) add an extra layer of protection to your accounts, making it harder for fraudsters to break in.

At Kindred, features like auto-deposit help ensure your e-transfers go directly into your account without the need for clicking on a potential compromised link.

Good Habits Make a Big Difference

Taking a few simple steps can go a long way in keeping your accounts secure. For starters, review your statements regularly to spot any unfamiliar transactions. Setting up account alerts that come right to your email or cell phone can also help you stay on top of activity, notifying you of transactions or changes in real time.

And don’t forget about the importance of strong, unique phrase passwords. Avoid using easy-to-guess passwords like “password123” or personal information like your pet’s name or birthdate. Instead, create a passphrase that’s longer and harder to crack—something like “Snowy-Farmhouse!64#Pancake.”

A password manager can help you create and safely store these complex passwords that are tough for scammers to guess. Remember! Don’t reuse your passwords, no matter how convenient it might be. Learn more password tips here.

Staying Educated and Vigilant

The more you know about potential risks, the better prepared you’ll be. Scammers are always finding new ways to trick people. Staying informed about common tactics can make all the difference. Take time to learn about phishing scams, fake emails, and other methods fraudsters use to steal information.

Protecting your accounts doesn’t have to be overwhelming. And remember, if something feels off, it’s always worth double-checking. If you need assistance activating features or reviewing your accounts, our Member Contact Centre is here to help.
